Checklist for Travel

6-24 months out

  • Identify what is most important to each person – sightseeing, relaxing, family time, etc.

  • Enable seniors to travel with dignity and respect 

  • Understand your options and decide what best meets your needs – work with your travel advisor

            Ocean cruises – easiest for a variety of ages, needs, price points

            River cruises – takes you into the heart of the cities, often with cobblestones and steps

            Land packages – includes meals, tours and fellow travelers

            Customized, on your own – select your own locations, hotels, etc.

  • Review available pre and post tours, additional daily tours, and other options

            Consider going a day early so you are rested and delays or lost baggage can catch up

  • Review and select travel insurance

  • Book flights with the tour or on your own

            Frequent travelers may want to select their airline, seats for upgrades, etc.

            Plan for longer layovers

            Transfers may be included or may be worth paying for – less hassle

  • Reserve rental cars if needed – more difficult to get now and more expensive

3-6 Months Out

  • Finalize all details, extra days, hotels, transfers, etc.

  • Reserve any desired equipment for special needs 

  • Make final payments  

  • Let cruises or tours know about dietary needs, gluten-free, vegetarian, low sodium, etc.

  • Think about luggage – everything needs wheels, carry on what you need for 24-48 hours

  • Identify requirements of each airline – carry-ons must be smaller and lighter on some

  • Get vaccine cards, passport and visas if needed, alsoMobile Passport, Pre, Clear, Global Entry

  • Consider paying for lounges at the airport – quiet, comfortable, help with flight issues

  • Find out options for cell phones in other countries, daily or monthly international rates

1 Month Out

  • Plan all departure details – getting to the airport, dog watcher, mail, plants, etc.

  • Reserve a wheelchair for connections at the airports, even if you might not need it

  • Plan for Covid testing

  • Select luggage and start selecting clothing etc., dress for the unexpected and dress in layers

  • Get cash in the currency of the country including coins for bathrooms

1 Week Out

  • Double check all departure details

  • Decide what to carry on

  • Pack and repack less

  • Get COVID tested

Day of Travel

  • Get to the airport early – it can be a zoo

  • Then relax and enjoy your trip!
